Abstract
This article presents a summary of the findings concerning the state of São Paulo in the study Ensino médio, qualidade e equidade: avanços e desafios em quatro estados: Ceará, Goiás, Pernambuco and São Paulo [Secondary Education, Quality and Equality: Advances and Challenges in Four States: Ceará, Goiás, Pernambuco and São Paulo]. The text focuses on the following problematics: Are there any secondary schools which, despite being situated in areas of high social and economic vulnerability, have achieved good performance levels? The study found factors that contribute to students’ learning in the schools investigated, such as: a good relationship between management, the school team and students; teamwork; opportunities for youth-led initiatives in the schools; school team’s stability; and the support of the principals.
