An African character mobilizes the community by telling stories
Abstract
This case study discusses the Grãos de Luz e Griô Project, active in the city of Lençóis, in the state of Bahia. The Grãos de Luz association started with an aid-based initiative to distribute food to families of socially vulnerable urban area children and teens. With the support of other social and local organizations and based on educational experiences developed at Federal University of Bahia (Universidade Federal da Bahia), it began to develop educational and cultural workshops for adolescents and young people, involving families and the community. A Griô (or Griot in English) is a character from northeastern Africa who travels among the villages to tell the people stories. “Grãos de Luz e Griô” used the Afro-Indigenous traditions of the people of Lençóis to recreate this character through the work of educators at Associação Grãos de Luz. The project includes workshops on identity, dance and popular music, arts and crafts with recycled and reused materials, visual arts, toys and cooperativism. All activities contribute to the physical, mental, moral, spiritual and social development of children and teens, involving their families, the schools and the communities.
