A dialogue with Brazilian cultural heritage
Abstract
Culture has always been a theme of the activities that Cenpec has developed throughout its work. In 2004, its nearly twenty years of experience led Cenpec to organize and open the Education and Culture area, dealing with articulating notions of culture, identity and cultural heritage in executing education geared towards citizenship. The text describes the goals, principles, focus and actions guiding the inaugural work in Cenpec's Education and Culture area, namely the São Paulo Territory Project: history, art and customs (Projeto Terra Paulista: histórias, arte e costumes). This Project is part of the presumption that the right to education and social protection should be connected to a cultural policy based on recognizing differences and the heterogeneity of people and groups as well as on a social and economic policy of promoting equal rights and redistribution of socially generated material and symbolic wealth. Terra Paulista has resulted in ten volumes and two videos, through investigation, registration and appreciation of cultural heritage in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The conclusion it finds is that appreciation of cultural heritage and an openness to new influences can be the path to a major contemporary challenge: reinstating what is traditional within what is modern, while at the same time transforming these traditions using so many of the other legacies that are found.
